Prenatal Yoga FAQ

Belly pic pregnancy Photography by local photographer Leo Reinfeld
"Your class was one of the best things I did to prepare for my bambina's arrival! I always felt so relaxed and rejuvenated after yoga and slept super well on Wednesday nights. I  would totally recommend your class to any pregnant friends, and will hopefully take it again myself!" ~ Danielle VanHorn

If you don't find the answer to you question here, please email or call me! I'll be happy to answer any questions that you have.

When can I start?
Anytime you feel comfortable. All women are welcome in class, no matter how early or how far along you are. It's never too late to start prenatal yoga.

What if I'm nauseas?
Some women feel like prenatal yoga helps reduce nausea. Others like to wait until their nausea has faded some. It's up to you. In general, if you're feeling o.k., then it's fine to start prenatal yoga.

I've never done yoga before. Is that o.k.?
Absolutely! Beginners are welcome. Pregnancy is actually a time when many women start yoga due to being a gentle and safe exercise for pregnancy.

How does prenatal yoga differ from a regular class?
There are certain yoga poses that you cannot do while pregnant. In a regular class, you would either sit those poses out or be offered an alternative pose, depending on the instructor. Sometimes that gets tedious for a pregnant woman.

In a prenatal yoga class, we don't do any poses that are unsafe for pregnant women and we do a lot of poses and movement that actually aide in preparing your body for giving birth. In our prenatal yoga classes, we also have a circle time at the beginning and do a lot of breathing that can be used to help you during labor. See the Benefits of Prenatal Yoga for more about this.

Do I need my doctor's or midwife's permission?
Yes. Please be sure to check with your doctor or midwife to make sure it's o.k. for you to do prenatal yoga. I don't require notes :), but I assume that you have already checked with them regarding the class. Usually just a quick call to their office is enough to get an o.k.

What do I wear/what do I bring?
Wear something in which you are comfortable moving and stretching. Usually a pair of leggings or shorts and a tank or snug t-shirt is fine. It's not hard to find snug when you're pregnant, so wear those clothes you're outgrowing to prenatal yoga !

Please bring a sticky mat with you. You can purchase a mat locally at places such as Target, Borders, or Whole Foods.  Ebay also has some good deals on mats.

In addition, you're welcome to bring a towel or small throw pillow for the relaxation period.

Is it o.k. to bring water?
Yes!  Please feel free to bring a water bottle into class with you.  It's important to stay hydrated during pregnancy and especially during prenatal yoga.

What day and time does it meet?
Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:45 p.m. in Cooper City. Please check the Prenatal Yoga Classes page to see which class/session is open. My classes tend to fill up these days!

Can I do more than one day?
Absolutely! I would be happy to see you in class two times a week! When you complete your registration form, just check that you want to attend both days - it's right at the top.

How much does it cost?
Usual cost is $128 for the entire 8 weeks for one day per week. If you're joining mid-session, you pay the cost of the remainder of the session. Please email me or call me to calculate the cost! Occasionally I run a short session or a Special, which then costs less. Please double-check the Classes page to make sure which session you are signing up for and how much it costs.

Where does it meet?
The Cooper City prenatal yoga classes are at the Yoga Institute of Broward in Cooper City, Florida. We're just west of Nob Hill on Griffin.  Directions to Prenatal Yoga.

  6. I will email you to confirm receipt of your registration and your spot in the class.

The session already started. Can I still sign up?
As long as there is room in the class, you can join a session. You pay for the remainder of the session. Sorry, no drop-ins without prior approval.

Oh No!  The class is closed! What are my options?
You can go on the Waiting List for either class. Women give birth during the session and when a spot opens up, I offer it first to my Waiting List. You can also receive announcements for upcoming prenatal yoga sessions so that you register when it first opens up.

Jiwan is the other main prenatal yoga teacher in the area. She usually teaches in Coral Springs and Hollywood. Please contact Jiwan directly for information about her prenatal yoga classes.

Lisa at Yoga One runs a wonderful Sunday afternoon prenatal yoga class in Hollywood.

Jess also teaches a prenatal yoga class in East Ft. Lauderdale at Red Pearl Yoga. She's a wonderful teacher who just put out a prenatal yoga DVD. Be sure to check out her DVD, her website and her class! Click here for all three.

Ruth Ann at our own Yoga Institute of Broward is one of the few certified Iyengar yoga teachers in the entire area. She's fantastic and is my personal yoga teacher! If you are not a beginner, try one of her regular classes. She will modify poses for you as time permits.

If you're down South Florida, go to DeAnna's classes! She's an Anusara teacher who is incredidlbe! Her website is Magical Heart Yoga - how could you NOT want to go to her classes :)?

There's also Debra Geymayr who teaches in Coral Gables. She offers Prenatal & Postnatal w/baby Yoga, Childbirth Education in HypnoBirthing, Holistic certified labor & postpartum doula care.

Do you recommend any prenatal yoga DVDs?
Yes! Prenatal yoga DVDs  or videos make it easy to practice yoga at home or to get started if you didn't get in the class. See my Prenatal Yoga DVD reviews page for reviews of some popular videos and DVDs.

I really want in the next session. Why don't you accept registrations any time?
Current students always have priority in my classes. First, I have to see how many are signing up for the next session before I see how many spots I have open for new students. You can go on the Waiting List for either class though. Women give birth during the session and when a spot opens up, I offer it first to my Waiting List. Waiting List people also have priority for the next session.

To make sure you get in the next session, join my Announcement List!

My due date is before the session ends. Should I sign up?
Sessions are prorated for due dates. If you want to attend and you're due four weeks into a session, then you only pay for four weeks. After that, you can pay class by class. You need instructor approval to do this, so please give me a call or drop me an email prior to registering.

Do you teach Mom and Baby Yoga?
Not right now. T
ami Estepa teaches Mom and Baby in the West Broward area. Email her at ferrelltamara@hotmail.com. Memorial West Hospital has a mom and baby exercise class that includes some yoga. Yoga Source in Coral Springs also offers a Mom and Baby Yoga class. Or try the Mom and Baby classes at Yoga One in Hollywood.

I had my baby and now want a regular class. Do you have any recommendations?
Yes! Ruth Ann Bradley is a fantastic teacher and one of the few certified Iyengar Yoga teachers in Broward County . She teaches in Cooper City. Check out her Iyengar Yoga website for details about her classes!

Or go to Yoga One in East Hollywood! Visit Yoga One's website to see their class schedule!

I have more questions.
Please feel free to call or email me any time. Also check out The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga. Your questions may be answered there.
